A Vote for Change

The Executive Board of the World Federation of Science Journalists has asked its member associations to allow a change to its voting system. If approved the change would enable any member of affiliated associations to apply to be considered as a candidate for the Board.

It also provides an update on the respective responsibilities of the members of the Board. Jean-Marc Fleury, Executive Director of WFSJ, has been named Chair of the Bell Globemedia Chair in Science Journalism at Laval University (Québec), on 28 August 2007. "The Chair will aim at examining the mediatisation of science at a time when science journalism is undergoing tremendous changes", he said at a ceremony held in Québec City.

Argentina honours Board Member Valeria Roman

Valeria Roman, member of the Board of WFSJ and science journalist with Clarin (Buenos Aires), was selected as one of the 100 best journalists in Argentina by the Konex Foundation. She will receive her award next September.

The Konex Awards were instituted in 1980 to be annually delivered so that the most distinguished Argentine personalities and institutions in every field important to the country's community be an example to Argentina's youth.

Jan Rydman, who was a member of the WFSJ Finance Committee, passed away the 31 March 2007, in Helsinki (Finland). This was a shock for all his colleagues at the World Federation of Science Journalists who have had the great chance to know this wonderful, hard working and charismatic man.

Executive Director of WFSJ honoured for lifetime commitment

Jean-Marc Fleury, executive director of the World Federation of Science journalists, was awarded a “Prix hommage”, by the Quebec Association of Science communicators, ACS, for his lifetime contribution to Science communication. Mr Fleury was one of the founding members of the Quebec association 30 years ago.

WFSJ has lost a Friend and Supporter

As President of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW), Laura van Dam played a key role in making NASW a member of the World Federation of Science Journalists. She was also a strong supporter of the last World Conference of Science Journalists held in Montréal, October 2004, and contributed to make it a success.
